About

Currently Musical Director of the Opera National de Paris and Chief Conductor of the Wiener Symphoniker beginning September 2014, Philippe Jordan has been appointed Musical Director of the Wiener Staatsoper as of the 2020-2021 season. 

He began his career as Kapellmeister at the Stadttheater in Ulm. He then became the assistant of Daniel Barenboim at the Deutsche Staatsoper in Berlin and, from 2001 to 2004, musical director of the Graz Opera. He has conducted in many of the world’s most celebrated theatres and festivals, including the Dresden Semperoper, London’s Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Zurich Opera, the Wiener Staatsoper, the New York Metropolitan Opera, the Théâtre de La Monnaie in Brussels, the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, and the Bayreuth, Glyndebourne, Salzburg, and Aix Festivals. In concert, Philippe Jordan has conducted numerous ensembles including the Berliner Philharmoniker, London’s Philharmonia Orchestra, the Chicago Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, Washington’s National Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, the Wiener Philharmoniker, the Berlin Staatskapelle, the Hamburg NDR, the DSO Berlin, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra, the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, and the Zurich Tonhalle. Next season, at the Paris Opera, he will be conducting new productions of Don Carlos, Benvenuto Cellini and Parsifal, along with revivals of Pelléas et Mélisande and Così fan Tutte. He will also be conducting all of Tchaikovsky’s symphonies. 
In July and August 2017, he will conduct Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at the Bayreuth Festival. Philippe Jordan has made numerous DVD recordings including Werther, Doktor Faust, Salomé, Tannhäuser, Carmen, and The Marriage of Figaro. Together with the Paris Opera Orchestra, he has also recorded Pelléas et Mélisande (DVD Naïve), Richard Strauss’s Eine Alpensinfonie with Naïve Records, Verdi’s Requiem, a series of symphonic excerpts from the Ring des Nibelungen, a Debussy/Stravinsky/Ravel CD, Daphnis et Chloé and Ravel’s La Valse (Victoire de la Musique Classique 2016) a Mussorgsky/Prokofiev CD from Erato/Warner Classics, and the complete symphonies of Beethoven (DVD Arthaus Musik). He has also recorded Schubert’s 7th and 8th Symphonies with the Wiener Symphoniker. In 2013, he was named “Artist of the Year” by Classica magazine for his recordings with the Paris Opera Orchestra and in 2017, best conductor at the International Opera Awards.
