About

Estonian bass Ain Anger made his Royal Opera debut in 2016 as Pimen (Boris Godunov). He returns in the 2018/19 Season to sing Hunding (Die Walküre).

Anger trained at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. He is renowned for his interpretation of Wagner bass roles, with engagements in Wagner operas including Herrmann (Tannhäuser) for Vienna State Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin and the BBC Proms, Heinrich (Lohengrin) for Deutsche Oper Berlin and in Tallinn, Hunding (Die Walküre) in Frankfurt, Paris, Munich, Houston and for Vienna State Opera, Fafner (Das Rheingold) and Veit Pogner (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg) for Vienna State Opera, Pogner for San Francisco Opera, Fasolt (Das Rheingold) for Liceu, Barcelona, Daland (Der fliegende Holländer) for La Scala, Milan, and Washington National Opera, Fafner (Der Ring des Nibelungen) for Bayreuth Festival and Hagen (Götterdämmerung) for Canadian Opera Company and Deutsche Oper Berlin. His other repertory includes Boris (Boris Godunov), the Commendatore (Don Giovanni), Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte), Rocco (Fidelio), Zaccaria (Nabucco), Sparafucile (Rigoletto), Padre Guardiano (La forza del destino), Jacopo Fiesco (Simon Boccanegra), Grand Inquisitor (Don Carlos), Ramfis (Aida), Prince Gremin (Eugene Onegin), Dosifey (Khovanshchina), Orest (Elektra) and Méphistophélès (Faust).

Anger also sings widely in concert with major US and European orchestras, under conductors including James Conlon, Charles Dutoît, Mariss Jansons, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Seiji Ozawa, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Christian Thielemann. His concert repertory includes Beethoven’s Missa solemnis, Verdi’s Requiem, Mahler’s Symphony no.8 and Dvorák’s Stabat Mater. He was awarded the Order of the White Star in 2013.
