John Relyea has been invited to the great international opera houses, among them, New York’s Metropolitan Opera, the San Francisco Opera (where he performed in the context of the Merola Opera Programme and the Adler Fellowship), the Chicago Opera, the Seattle Opera, the Canadian Opera Company of Toronto, the Royal Opera House, London’s Covent Garden, the Paris Opera, Munich’s Bayerische Staatsoper, the Vienna Staatsoper, Vienna’s Theater an der Wien, and Saint Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre…

He has performed the lead roles in Attila, Don Quixote, and Aleko as well as Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro, Zaccaria in Nabucco, Bertram in Robert le Diable, Pagano in I Lombardi, Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor, Colline in La Bohème, Don Alfonso in Lucrezia Borgia, Don Basilio in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Alidoro in La Cenerentola, Giorgio in I Puritani, Enrico in Anna Bolena, Banco in Macbeth, Garibaldo in Rodelinda, Mephistopheles in Faust and La Damnation de Faust, the four villains in Les Contes d'Hoffmann, Escamillo in Carmen, King Marke in Tristan und Isolde, Caspar in Der Freischütz, Nick Shadow in The Rake’s Progress, Collatinus in The Rape of Lucretia, the Water Goblin in Rusalka, and King René in Iolanta. He has also performed in concert with the great symphonic ensembles (the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra….) as well as in recital (London’s Wigmore Hall). He has sung under the direction of some of the greatest conductors, including Harry Bicket, Pierre Boulez, Sir Colin Davis, Christoph von Dohnányi, Gustavo Dudamel, Christoph Eschenbach, Valery Gergiev, Bernard Haitink, Mariss Jansons, Louis Langrée, James Levine, Lorin Maazel, Sir Charles Mackerras, Sir Neville Marriner, Zubin Mehta, Kent Nagano, Sir Roger Norrington, Seiji Ozawa, Antonio Pappano, Sir Simon Rattle, Donald Runnicles, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Robert Spano, Wolfgang Sawallisch, and Ilan Volkov. This season, he will be making his debut at Milan’s La Scala in Bluebeard’s Castle.

Projects: Balthazar (La Favorite) with the Washington Concert Opera, Mephistopheles (Faust) at Dresden’s Semperoper, Wurm (Luisa Miller) at the Teatro Real in Madrid, Zaccaria (Nabucco) at London’s Covent Garden, and Don Alfonso (Lucrezia Borgia) at the Munich Festival.
