Overview

Richard Strauss's Ariadne on Naxos (1916) does not lack modernity to the extent that this opera, with a libretto by Hofmannsthal, Strauss's writer of choice, stages an unexpected encounter between two opposite lyrical styles, opera seria and opera buffa, and moreover draws upon the always delightful artifice of the play-within-the-play. The result is a chamber opera that is as impertinent as it is irresistible.

The richest man in Vienna has engaged two companies and commissioned them to write, at the same time, a serious work and a comic one on
the theme of Ariadne on Naxos . Eventually, he asks the two groups to unite for a joint performance.
Musically, Strauss succeeds in creating a delicious collision of two genres. His score is parodic, littered with numerous quotes, yet it is also and above all magnificently inventive. The contrast can also be found in the voices: that of Ariadne, the suffering, abandoned woman, and that of Zerbinetta, the giddy and exuberant commedia dell'arte character.
For this production, for which Martin Crimp served as dramatic advisor, Katie Mitchell eschews her customary "live cinema" approach in order to focus on defining characters via their appearance: through their choice of clothes, through their gestures, she increasingly engages with the notion of gender.
These neatly outlined roles are notably performed and sung by Ann Petersen (Ariadne), Roberto Saccà (Bacchus) and Olga Pudova (Zerbinetta) and accompanied by the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg under the baton of Lawrence Renes.

History
Premiere of this production: Staatsoper Stuttgart

Ariadne auf Naxos (Ariadne on Naxos) is an opera by Richard Strauss with a German libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal. Combining slapstick comedy and consummately beautiful music, the opera's theme is the competition between high and low art for the public's attention.

The Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg, inaugurated in 1964 as the Théâtre Municipal de la Ville de Luxembourg is the city's major venue for drama, opera and ballet. It underwent renovation work in 2002–2003 resulting in substantial improvements to the stage technology, acoustics and lighting facilities.

Since 1869, Luxembourg City's main theatre had been the Théâtre des Capucins located near the centre of the old town. In December 1958, after the need for a properly designed theatre building had become a priority, a competition was launched with a view to completing the construction work for the millennium celebrations in 1963. The winner was Alain Bourbonnais (1925–1988), a Parisian architect. Work began in autumn 1959 and the theatre was festively inaugurated on 15 April 1964.

Over the years, it became increasingly difficult to cope with the staging requirements of touring companies. Safety requirements also needed to be upgraded while asbestos had to be removed from the existing fabric. The work was entrusted to Kurt Gerling and Werner Arendt of Gerling + Arendt Planungsgesellschaft mbH of Berlin. Hence, in 2002–2003 the building was equipped with modern facilities and technical features, satisfying European requirements in regard to stage technology and facility management while the distinctive architecture of the original 1960s building remained intact
