Overview

The choreographer Eun-Me Ahn, born in South Korea in 1963, has a rich background: she has explored shamanic traditions, lived in New York for a long time, had a deep friendship with Pina Bausch and is present at major festivals as a figure of the avant-garde. In 2018 she caused a sensation at the Grand Théâtre with her Dancing Grandmothers. In her new piece, Eun-Me Ahn brings together five young dancers who were born in different Asian countries in the year 2000, under the sign of the dragon, with the dancers of her Seoul-based company.

Korea, Taiwan, Hong-Kong and Singapour were known as the "Four Asian dragons", because of their dynamic growth. The idea the choreographer develops in Dragons is about creating a portrait of contemporary Asia and exploring the dynamics that run through dance as it is practiced there.
What does the world look like when you are twenty years old and your life lies ahead of you? What could the future of dance look like in Asia, with its young generation that is deeply rooted in its time and yet steeped in traditions that are sometimes thousands of years old? For Eun-Me Ahn, the body says more than words. It reflects a personal story and way of life. Working with young dancers is an opportunity to take an energy that is both physical and mental into consideration and to tell the reality of a country and of a continent through their bodies.

Venue Info

Grand Theatre of the City of Luxembourg - Luxembourg
Location   1 Boulevard Robert Schuman

The Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg, inaugurated in 1964 as the Théâtre Municipal de la Ville de Luxembourg is the city's major venue for drama, opera and ballet. It underwent renovation work in 2002–2003 resulting in substantial improvements to the stage technology, acoustics and lighting facilities.

Since 1869, Luxembourg City's main theatre had been the Théâtre des Capucins located near the centre of the old town. In December 1958, after the need for a properly designed theatre building had become a priority, a competition was launched with a view to completing the construction work for the millennium celebrations in 1963. The winner was Alain Bourbonnais (1925–1988), a Parisian architect. Work began in autumn 1959 and the theatre was festively inaugurated on 15 April 1964.

Over the years, it became increasingly difficult to cope with the staging requirements of touring companies. Safety requirements also needed to be upgraded while asbestos had to be removed from the existing fabric. The work was entrusted to Kurt Gerling and Werner Arendt of Gerling + Arendt Planungsgesellschaft mbH of Berlin. Hence, in 2002–2003 the building was equipped with modern facilities and technical features, satisfying European requirements in regard to stage technology and facility management while the distinctive architecture of the original 1960s building remained intact
