August Everding was born in Bottrop, Westphalia, and died in January 1999 in Munich, Germany.
He studied philosophy, theology, German Studies and theatre studies in Bonn and Munich. At the Münchner Kammerspiele he started as an assistant to Fritz Kortner and Hans Schweikart. In 1959 he became head of the theatre, acting director in 1960, and director of this house in 1963. After turning to the opera, he became the director of the Hamburg State Opera in 1973 and the director of the Bavarian State Opera in 1977. From 1982 to 1993 he was general director of all Bavarian state theaters and from 1993 to 1999 he was state director and president of the Bavarian Theater Academy. Everding was Chairman of the German cultural Council, President of the Deutsche bühnenverein, the German section of the International theatre Institute and the International Association of Opera house Directors.
