Overview

Experience the brilliance of three major European choreographers in a program that celebrates the range, nuance, and stylistic diversity of contemporary ballet. Van Manen’s Grosse Fuge strips movement to its essence—precise, sensual, and utterly exacting. Wheeldon’s Within the Golden Hour, costumed by Zac Posen, moves from virtuosic clarity into sweeping romantic lyricism. Khan’s Dust draws from the haunting legacy of WWI—visceral, dramatic, and emotionally unsparing. From Dutch precision and British elegance to Khan’s singular fusion of South Asian and Western movement — this curation presents a portrait of the art form at its most inventive, disciplined, and alive.

Grosse Fuge is a powerful neoclassical ballet by Dutch choreographer Hans van Manen, created in 1971 for Nederlands Dans Theater. Set to the monumental music of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Grosse Fuge, Op. 133, the ballet explores human relationships, tension, intimacy, and the complex dialogue between individuals. With its minimalist design, precise movements, and striking physical language, the work reveals Van Manen’s signature style — elegant simplicity combined with emotional intensity.

Dust is a powerful contemporary ballet created by Akram Khan in 2014 for the English National Ballet as part of Lest We Forget, a programme commemorating the First World War. Inspired by the experiences of soldiers and the people left behind, the work explores the human cost of war, memory, loss, and resilience. With music by Jocelyn Pook, dramatic lighting, and Khan’s distinctive movement language blending contemporary dance with influences from Kathak, Dust creates a haunting portrait of survival and remembrance.

Venue Info

War Memorial Opera House - San Francisco
Location   301 Van Ness Avenue

Home of the San Francisco Opera and San Francisco Ballet, the War Memorial Opera House opened in 1932 with TIME magazine declaring it “…a house made possible by all the people of San Francisco.”

Designed by Arthur Brown, Jr., the prominent American architect who also created San Francisco City Hall, this cultural landmark is one of the last Beaux-Arts structures built in the United States. Today, the stately building is host to a variety of events. In addition to our resident company opera and ballet performances, the 3006-seat auditorium may be available for lectures, classical concerts, recitals, and other performances that can be installed within an existing production.

With its ornate features and 38-foot ceiling, the grand Main Lobby makes an unforgettable setting for elegant cocktail receptions and sit-down dinners. The War Memorial Opera House is one of the Bay Area’s most sought-after and unique venues, offering modern technology and the ambiance of old-world theaters.
