Bregenz Festival 2022

Enthusiastic visitors, impressive productions and a lot of positive reporting in the media – three days before the 76th season ends, the Bregenz Festival can look back on a highly varied summer of culture, the first production of which was staged back at Easter. The opera on the lake stage attracted visitors in droves again. Madame Butterfly production played on 26 dates in all, including dress rehearsal and Crossculture Night. The opera by Giacomo Puccini, which was staged for the first time on the Bregenz lake stage, has played to capacity audiences. The festival season began on the Easter weekend with guest performances of the play No Exit (Huis clos) presented by Vienna’s Burgtheater.

Overview

Jakob Nolte’s approach to The Tempest is a special retranslation that sifts through the Old English original word by word. This creates a fantasy language that can be decoded by melody and sound and is as wonderfully strange as the inhabitants of the island are. Stage director Jan Bosse and the ensemble around Wolfram Koch, who takes on the role of Prospero, bring this puzzling and ecstatic text to life using the illusionary skills of theatre.

The magician Prospero, former Duke of Milan, lives on a lonely island. Years ago, his brother Antonio plotted an intrigue, dethroned him and abandoned him in a boat on the open sea.

By some miracle, he and his daughter Miranda were able to reach the safety of an island where he built himself a new world. There, he now rules over the elements, ghosts and magic creatures, like Caliban or the sylph Ariel, who are native inhabitants of the island.

As "luck" would have it, one day Prospero sights the fleet of the King of Naples, which Antonio belongs to. With Ariel’s help, he unleashes a storm capsizing his brother’s ship and the whole crew, who are left stranded on the island. Now Prospero has the upper hand and sees his chance for belated revenge or reconciliation.

The Tempest is one of William Shakespeare’s last works and his ultimate creation myth. It views the theatre as a symbolic isle of opportunities. The exceptional situation turns into an experiment on the utopian founding of a state and the experimental set-up for a completely new beginning: What would I do if I were king? In doing so, Shakespeare playfully touches upon topics such as power and oppression, exploitation and appropriation, nature and civilization.

Venue Info

Theater am Kornmarkt - Bregenz
Location   Kornmarktstraße 2

The Vorarlberger Landestheater is a theater with a permanent acting ensemble and numerous guests in Bregenz. From September to June it offers a fixed schedule for the city of Bregenz and the state of Vorarlberg.

The Theater for Vorarlberg was founded in 1945. The parent company is the Theater am Kornmarkt in Bregenz. In addition, the theater plays at several guest performance locations in the state of Vorarlberg. The program is characterized by contemporary and classic plays, plus performances for young people and children. One opera production is shown per season.

The main venue is the Bregenzer Kornhaus, built on the Kornmarkt between 1838 and 1840 according to the plans of the architect Josef Hirn. The building is located on the Kornmarktplatz, which was redesigned in 2010-2013. The main gable facade is sober and has an open arcaded porch on sandstone pillars and side blind arcades. From 1951 to 1955, the Kornhaus was converted into a regular theater - today's Vorarlberger Landestheater - according to plans by Willibald Braun and Wilhelm Braun. The interior and the design of the foyer were taken over by the painter Hubert Berchtold in 1956 with a mosaic and the painter Fritz Krcal1957 with a painting. Conversion and renovation work took place between 1993 and 1995 under the direction of the architect Helmut Kuess. Since then, the SMALL HAUS has also been available as a second venue. The building is under monument protection ( list entry ).

The theater building on the Kornmarkt was managed by the Bregenz Cultural Office until 2013. Since then, the building has been rented out to the Landestheater by the city of Bregenz all year round. With 9 to 10 premieres in the GROSSEN HAUS, the theater offers a varied program throughout the year, which includes a Christmas play for families and an opera production in cooperation with the Vorarlberg Symphony Orchestra.
