Overview

Only This Verdant Green is a celebrated Chinese dance poetry drama inspired by Wang Ximeng’s masterpiece painting A Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains. Through elegant choreography, traditional aesthetics, and breathtaking stage design, the production transforms a thousand-year-old landscape painting into a living theatrical experience.

Only This Verdant Green – A Dance Painting of A Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains is a landmark Chinese dance poetry drama created by the China Oriental Song and Dance Ensemble. Inspired by the Northern Song Dynasty masterpiece A Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains by the young painter Wang Ximeng , the production brings the beauty of traditional Chinese painting to life through movement, music, and stage artistry.

The story unfolds through the perspective of a modern Palace Museum researcher, known as the “scroll unroller,” who enters into a dialogue across time with Wang Ximeng and the artisans who created the magnificent artwork. The performance explores the creation of the painting, the dedication of craftsmen, and the timeless connection between art, nature, and human spirit.

Combining classical Chinese dance, contemporary choreography, traditional music, and innovative theatrical design, Only This Verdant Green recreates the colors, mountains, rivers, and poetic atmosphere of the famous scroll painting on stage. The production is renowned for its iconic “Verdant Green” dance imagery, elegant movements, and unique interpretation of Chinese aesthetics.
