Overview

Nine Songs is an original poetic dance drama inspired by Qu Yuan’s ancient Chinese masterpiece Jiu Ge (Nine Songs). Combining classical Chinese dance, contemporary choreography, and stunning visual design, the production creates a poetic world of gods, nature, and humanity, revealing the beauty and philosophy of traditional Chinese culture.

Nine Songs is an original Chinese poetic dance drama inspired by Qu Yuan’s ancient masterpiece Jiu Ge (Nine Songs), one of the most important works of classical Chinese literature. The production transforms the romantic mythology and spiritual world of the poem into a contemporary stage creation, using dance to explore the relationship between gods, nature, and humanity.

The drama draws inspiration from the ancient deities described in Nine Songs, including Dong Jun (The Sun God), Yun Zhong Jun (The Cloud God), Shan Gui (The Mountain Spirit), He Bo (The River God), Xiang Jun, Xiang Furen, Da Siming, and Shao Siming. These divine figures are presented through symbolic pairings representing the four dimensions of heaven, earth, humans, and gods, creating a poetic universe on stage.

Through expressive Chinese dance language, the production portrays the emotions hidden behind mythology: love and longing, waiting and separation, freedom and destiny, life and eternity. Rather than simply retelling ancient legends, Nine Songs uses traditional Chinese aesthetics to reflect universal human feelings and the spiritual connection between people and the natural world.

Directed and choreographed by renowned young dancer Hu Yang , the production combines classical Chinese dance, contemporary movement, theatrical design, lighting, and music to create a visually stunning stage poem. The work brings ancient Eastern philosophy into a modern theatrical form, presenting a dreamlike landscape filled with poetry, symbolism, and emotional depth.
