About

Matthias Goerne is one of the most sought-after singers on the international scene. He makes regular guest appearances at the major festivals and the most prestigious concert halls

He has collaborated with some of the world’s great orchestras and he is a partner for eminent pianists and first-rate conductors. He has appeared at the New York Metropolitan Opera, London’s Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Milan’s La Scala, the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Paris Opera and the Vienna Staatoper. He has performed the roles of Wolfram (Tannhäuser), Amfortas (Parsifal), Kurwenal (Tristan und Isolde), the Wanderer (Siegfried), Orest (Elektra), Jochanaan (Salomé), the title role in Wozzeck, and the Duke in Bluebeard’s Castle. His many recordings have earned prestigious awards (four Grammy nominations, an ICMA Best Vocal Recital Award and, more recently, a Diapason d’Or/Arte). After his highly-acclaimed recordings with Vladimir Ashkenazy and Alfred Brendel for Universal Music, Matthias Goerne went on to accompany distinguished pianists and recorded a selection of Schubert’s Lieder on a series of 12 CDs for Harmonia Mundi (The Goerne/Schubert Edition). His recent recordings of Brahms’s Lieder with Christoph Eschenbach and Mahler’s Lieder with the BBC Symphony Orchestra were both hailed by the critics.

Between 2001 and 2005, Matthias Goerne taught song interpretation as an honorary professor at the Robert Schumann Academy of Music in Düsseldorf. In 2001, he was made an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Music in London. A native of Weimar, he studied with Hans-Joachim Beyer in Leipzig, and then with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.

During 2016/17 season, he continued his world tour in William Kentridge’s highly acclaimed production of Winterreise and embarked on another tour of European capitals with the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra. He made his debut in the roles of Jochanaan in Vienna and the Wanderer in a concert version of Siegfried with the Hong Kong Philharmonic under the baton of Jaap van Zweden. During the summer of 2017, he was invited to the Salzburg Festival where he performed the title role of Wozzeck and gave a concert with the pianist Daniil Trifonov. This season, he also appeared at the Philharmonie de Paris in a concert version of Elektra.
