British bass Matthew Rose was a member of The Royal Opera’s Young Artist Programme 2003–05. He has since returned to sing roles including Bottom (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Polyphemus (Acis and Galatea), Colline (La bohème), Masetto (Don Giovanni, including on tour with The Royal Opera to Japan), Harašta (The Cunning Little Vixen), Sparafucile (Rigoletto), Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte), Timur (Turandot), Talbot (Maria Stuarda), Raimondo (Lucia di Lammermoor) and Baron Ochs (Der Rosenkavalier).

Rose was born in Brighton and studied history before being advised by Benjamin Luxon to train as a singer. He trained at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and on graduation joined The Royal Opera’s Young Artist Programme. He now sings a wide repertory at the world’s leading opera houses, engagements including King Marke (Tristan und Isolde) and Claggart (Billy Budd) for English National Opera, Bottom (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Leporello (Don Giovanni), Nick Shadow (The Rake’s Progress) and Callistene (Poliuto) for Glyndebourne Festival, Talbot for the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Baron Ochs (Der Rosenkavalier) for Lyric Opera of Chicago, Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro) for Bavarian State Opera, Osmin (Die Entführung aus dem Serail) for Garsington Opera, Walter (Guillaume Tell) at the BBC Proms and Bottom for La Scala, Milan, Glyndebourne Festival, the Metropolitan Opera and Opéra de Lyon.

Rose performs widely in concert, with conductors including Andrew Davis, Gustavo Dudamel, Charles Dutoit, John Eliot Gardiner, Daniel Harding, Antonio Pappano, Robin Ticciati and Michael Tilson-Thomas. He is a keen recitalist who has recorded prolifically, including his 2013 debut solo recording of Winterreise with Gary Matthewman for Stone Records. He runs the Sussex music festival Matthew Rose and Friends.
