About
Liszt en Provence was founded in 1998 by Thérèse Français, whose passion for the piano and love of the music of Franz Liszt inspired her to create a festival in his name. It is held every summer in the prestigious Provencal vineyard and winery of Château Saint Estève, in the ownership of her husband’s family since 1809. The festival focusses on recitals from the romantic piano repertoire, most of them given on a large terrace in front of the château (with an alternative indoor venue, later in the season, in the former orangerie)..
Among the prominent pianists welcomed at Liszt en Provence have been Marc-André Hamelin, in its first year and many other occasions, Nikolai Demidenko, Kun Woo Païk, Stephen Hough, Mikhail Rudy, Pietro De Maria, Alexandre Tharaud, Kit Armstrong, Barry Douglas, Cyprien Katsaris, Konstantin Lifschitz, François-Frédéric Guy, Francesco Libetta, Hamish Milne, Roger Muraro, Yevgeny Sudbin, Yulianna Avdeeva, and Daniil Trifonov. In addition to such artists of established renown, the festival invites emerging young pianists.
The 2019 season, comprising 6 concerts, begins with the Berlioz Nuits d’Eté in an exclusive arrangement for piano and cello accompaniment. Later concerts include rising stars of the piano, such as Daniel Ciobanu, Alexandre Kantorow, and Suzana Bartal (in an all Liszt recital) as well as a tribute to Paganini in the form of the original Caprices for solo violin and their transformation by Liszt, Busoni and Friedman. A later date in October will be devoted to harpsichord music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
Château Saint Estève is located 8 km north of Orange near Avignon, enabling opera fans attending the famous Chorégies to combine opera and an evening of romantic piano music at Liszt en Provence. Free parking is provided. All concerts are followed by a complimentary glass of wine with the artist of the evening.

"Lovers of music and beautiful vineyards, tired of major summer festivals, hustle and bustle and sweaty snobbery, have you tasted the quiet and harmonious happiness of an evening proposed by Liszt in Provence at Chateau Saint Esteve? »(Roland de Candé, The Letter of the Musician)
"It is hard now to dissociate the terraces of Château Saint Estève and the Liszt festival in Provence, which has been established there for 20 years. It is true that the peaceful and romantic setting can evoke Tuscany or the Villa d'Este and that it lends itself admirably to music under the stars and to the performances of the best pianists "(J. Aimar," Sortieir ")
