Overview

Forty Days is an original Chinese musical based on the historic Yichang Evacuation of 1938. Led by industrialist Lu Zuofu, the Minsheng Company fleet raced against Japanese bombing to evacuate more than 1.5 million people and transport vital strategic supplies within forty days. The production transforms this extraordinary wartime operation into a large-scale musical about courage, responsibility and national survival.

Set in 1938, when Japanese forces were advancing towards Yichang, Forty Days recreates one of the most remarkable civilian rescue operations of the Second Sino-Japanese War.

With military and civilian personnel, refugees and vital industrial materials stranded along the Yangtze River, businessman Lu Zuofu and the Minsheng Company fleet undertook a desperate evacuation. Working under constant threat of Japanese air raids, the fleet transported more than 1.5 million people and around one million tonnes of strategic materials within forty days.

The musical combines historical drama with large-scale theatrical imagery. The sound world incorporates the powerful Chuanjiang boatmen's work songs, wartime music and orchestral writing, while the stage design uses industrial gears, metal bridges and the structural forms of ship hulls to evoke the machinery and industrial infrastructure that had to be preserved.

At the centre of the production is Lu Zuofu and the people around him — ship workers, refugees and soldiers — whose individual stories unfold against the pressure of the evacuation. The production focuses on courage, sacrifice, responsibility and collective action during a moment of national crisis.
