Overview

Farewell at Chuihong: Tang Yin is an original Chinese dance drama by the China National Opera & Dance Drama Theater based on the life of the renowned Ming Dynasty painter, poet, and calligrapher Tang Yin. Through expressive choreography and poetic stage imagery, the production explores his journey of artistic brilliance, personal hardship, and spiritual resilience.

Farewell at Chuihong: Tang Yin is a large-scale original Chinese dance drama inspired by the life of Tang Yin (1470–1524), one of the most celebrated painters, poets, and calligraphers of the Ming Dynasty. Moving beyond the popular image of Tang Yin as a carefree romantic scholar, the production presents a deeply human portrait of an artist whose life was shaped by ambition, injustice, love, friendship, and resilience.

Centered on the symbolic Chuihong Bridge, the dance drama traces Tang Yin's journey from a brilliant young scholar through the devastating imperial examination scandal that destroyed his political ambitions, his relationship with Shen Jiuniang, his friendship with renowned literati including Wen Zhengming, and his eventual spiritual awakening through art. Rather than following a strictly chronological narrative, the production unfolds through poetic memories, emotions, and symbolic imagery, blending historical events with expressive contemporary storytelling.

Directed by Li Shibo, the production combines classical Chinese dance, contemporary choreography, ink-painting-inspired stage design, multimedia projections, and an original musical score by Zhang Qu. Elegant visual aesthetics and emotionally rich choreography transform Tang Yin's life into a powerful meditation on creativity, perseverance, and the enduring spirit of Chinese culture.
