Overview

A contemporary Chinese dance drama combining Wing Chun martial arts, dance and cinematic storytelling. The production explores Chinese martial-arts heritage, Lingnan culture and the dreams and perseverance of ordinary people.

“Wing Chun” presents two interconnected stories. One takes place within a film, following martial-arts master Ip Man as he travels to Hong Kong carrying a plaque bearing the name of a Wing Chun school and seeks to establish and promote the martial art. The second takes place behind the camera, following the filmmakers whose own ambitions, struggles and dreams unfold during the making of the film.

The production transforms Wing Chun movements into dance and combines them with other Chinese martial-arts styles, including tai chi, baguazhang, bajiquan and praying mantis boxing. Xiangyunsha, a traditional Lingnan silk fabric, is incorporated into the costumes and visual design. Through the combination of dance, martial arts, lighting and film-like storytelling, the production connects traditional cultural heritage with contemporary stage art.

The dance drama Wing Chun was written by Feng Shuangbai, chairman of the China Dancers Association, co-directed by the acclaimed choreographers in the Mainland, Han Zhen and Zhou Liya and performed by Shenzhen Opera and Dance Theatre. The story begins with the 20th century film Wing Chun, presenting two parallel narratives: the "backstage" story of the film crew, and the "on-screen" journey of Ip Man’s struggles in Hong Kong. The performance integrates martial arts with classical and modern dance, providing the audience with a captivating visual experience.
