Grafenegg Music Festival 2026

The Grafenegg Music Festival 2026 celebrates its 20th anniversary with a season of extraordinary artistic excellence, transforming the magnificent grounds of Grafenegg Castle into one of Europe’s most captivating destinations for classical music. From 14 August to 6 September 2026, audiences are invited to experience world-class performances beneath open summer skies, surrounded by historic gardens, elegant architecture, and the unique atmosphere of Lower Austria’s cultural landscape.

Programme
Ludwig van Beethoven : Piano Concerto no. 5 in E flat major "Emperor", Op.73
Sergei Prokofiev: Symphony no. 5 in B flat major, Op.100
Overview

Equally highly regarded today are Gothenburg and Philharmonia Chief Conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali and Grammy award-winner Víkingur Ólafsson on the piano.

In early May 1809, Ludwig van Beethoven's friend and patron, Archduke Rudolph, fled Vienna to the Hungarian territories to escape the advancing Napoleonic troops. At a time when Beethoven, like the rest of the Viennese population, was suffering under the occupation – "cursed war, " he complained in a letter in September 1809 – he composed his Fifth Piano Concerto. Sergei Prokofiev wanted to symbolise "the triumph of the human spirit" in his Fifth, which premiered in January 1945 in the middle of the Second World War. Faced with the threat to life, both wrote truly heroic works from the soul, virtuoso sparks included. The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, which consistently ranks among the top five orchestras in the world, will ensure that orchestral sparks will also fly on this evening.

Venue Info

Wolkenturm - Grafenegg
Location   Grafenegg 10

The award-winning open air stage is characterized by its imaginative design of concrete, steel and glass.

With the Wolkenturm, Grafenegg’s centuries-old architectural landscape in 2007 gained an open-air stage that blended perfectly into its natural surroundings. Nestling in a natural hollow, the building designed by architects Marie-Therese Harnoncourt and Ernst J. Fuchs (the next ENTERprise – architects) is a sculpture that rises up a good 15 metres to the height of the treetops and affords unexpected views from a range of standpoints. From the terraces, with seating for over 1,700 spectators, as well as from the surrounding hills that provide lawn seating for over 400 people, one’s eye is caught by the historical castle and the romantic ambience of Grafenegg. The open-air arena’s acoustic shell produces an excellent sound through the acoustic detailing of the Munich firm Müller-BBM.

In case of bad weather, concerts at the Wolkenturm are moved to the Auditorium. For ticket holders in categories 1 to 5, alternative seating is available in the Auditorium, and for category 6, standing room with a seating rail. For ticket holders in category 7 and lawn seating, a live video transmission of the concert can be viewed at the Reitschule.
