Overview
Explore the Scottish Highlands, and the magical Isle of Skye on a 5-day journey. You'll head north to discover some of the most iconic scenery and sights that Scotland has to offer including the Isle of Skye and even feel like you've gone back in time as you hop on board a Jacobite steam train. You'll bid farewell to Edinburgh and head north to discover the real Scotland. The first stop on your journey will be Stirling, home to the Wallace Monument, where you can take in the scenic views of the landscape and castle before you continue north through Rannoch Moor and Glencoe to the fishing port of Oban which will be your home for the night. Take the Jacobite steam train and enjoy the spectacular ride with sweeping views of Loch Shiel. Arrive at Mallaig where you'll be able to catch the ferry over the sea to Skye and begin exploring this magical island. You'll head to Armadale Castle and Gardens, the former home of the MacDonalds before driving north to Portree where you'll settle down for the night. Continue to soak up more of the stunning Isle of Skye with its awe-inspiring mountains, rugged coastline, myths and legends before retunring to the mainland. On the way to Loch Ness, you'll stop at the incredibly photogenic, Eilean Donan Castle before winding your way along the Great Glen to Inverness, the capital of the Highlands where you'll spend the night. Then it's time to hunt for the elusive monster with a cruise on Loch Ness before turning northward to the stunning beauty of the north-west Highlands. You'll take in the beautiful town of Beauly with its Priory dating back to 1230, and then it's into the rugged and isolated mountains that secure Scotland's place as one of the last great wilderness in Europe. Before you head back to Inverness, you'll be able to sample a dram of the 'water of life' at a Highland Whisky Distillery. Your final day will be full of exploring once again as you head to Culloden Battlefield, the scene of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s defeat back in 1746, then the mysterious chamber cairns of Clava Cairns; which inspired the hit TV series Outlander. You'll visit the Highland Folk Museum to get a real taste of Highland life from the past centuries before heading to Dunkeld with its mighty cathedral, on your way back to Edinburgh.
