Overview

To mark the fifth anniversary of the Chur Choir Week, Anton Bruckner's Te Deum, one of the greatest masterpieces of his time, is on the program.

Despite its relatively short duration, the work impresses with its compositional range and emotional depth: monumental, organ-supported soundscapes contrast with soulful solo passages. Even the deeply religious and particularly self-critical composer was, for once, satisfied with this, his most successful choral work. This is evidenced by the following words, allegedly attributed to Bruckner: "If the good Lord one day calls me to him and asks: 'Where are the talents I gave you?', then I will hold out to him the roll of my Te Deum, and he will be a merciful judge to me."

The programmatic counterpart, on the eve of the 200th anniversary of his death, is Ludwig van Beethoven's Christ on the Mount of Olives . His only oratorio was composed in the spring of 1803, reportedly in just two weeks, and was not an opera only because performances of operas were forbidden during Lent. Nevertheless, he staged the story of Jesus' arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane in an unusually operatic and dramatic manner.

The Tonhalle Zürich, having undergone a complete programme of renovation between 2017 and 2021, has now been restored to its former glory.

Built at the turn of the 20th century, the Tonhalle has seen many changes in the course of its history. Partially demolished, the building was extended with the addition of the Kongresshaus; much of its original ornamentation was removed; its colourful decoration was toned down and then restored. However, the two concert halls remained substantially unchanged – which is particularly fortunate, as the Grosse Tonhalle is acoustically one of the world’s finest concert venues.

The entire complex is now classified as a historical monument. Thanks to the Zurich electorate, which in 2016 voted by a large majority in favour of a complete renovation, the venue now meets today’s varying requirements both in the auditorium and behind the scenes – and has been restored to its former glory. Following the renovation programme lasting from 2017 to 2021, the Grosse Tonhalle’s old tonal brilliance has also returned.
