Overview

With Giuseppe Verdi’s *Messa da Requiem*, the Oratorienchor Zürich’s program this year features undoubtedly the most operatic Requiem mass in music history. While the text adheres almost entirely to the Roman Catholic liturgy, the instrumentation mirrors that of an opera orchestra, complete with four vocal soloists. Consequently, the Requiem possesses the dramatic cohesion and musical diversity characteristic of Verdi’s great operas.

The work as a whole captivates through its striking musical language and dramatic structure. The chorus requires immense vocal power for *fortissimo* passages that sound almost archaic, yet must also possess the agility to let the *pianissimo* fade to the very edge of audibility.

The solo passages resemble operatic scenes, with the four soloists performing like characters in a musical drama. It is hardly surprising, then, that performances of the Verdi Requiem are generally reserved for the concert hall. Nevertheless—despite Verdi’s distance from the Church—it remains a profoundly spiritual work, centered on the human hope for mercy and redemption, both in this life and in eternity. This autumn, the Oratorienchor Zürich aims to do justice to both these facets in its interpretation, performing the work alongside the vocal ensemble Ars Canora and the Camerata Cantabile orchestra at the Tonhalle in Zurich and the Stadtkirche in Aarau.

Venue Info

Tonhalle Zürich - Zurich
Location   Claridenstrasse 7

The Tonhalle Zürich, having undergone a complete programme of renovation between 2017 and 2021, has now been restored to its former glory.

Built at the turn of the 20th century, the Tonhalle has seen many changes in the course of its history. Partially demolished, the building was extended with the addition of the Kongresshaus; much of its original ornamentation was removed; its colourful decoration was toned down and then restored. However, the two concert halls remained substantially unchanged – which is particularly fortunate, as the Grosse Tonhalle is acoustically one of the world’s finest concert venues.

The entire complex is now classified as a historical monument. Thanks to the Zurich electorate, which in 2016 voted by a large majority in favour of a complete renovation, the venue now meets today’s varying requirements both in the auditorium and behind the scenes – and has been restored to its former glory. Following the renovation programme lasting from 2017 to 2021, the Grosse Tonhalle’s old tonal brilliance has also returned.
