Overview

When baroque splendor meets contemporary expressiveness: in our LES CONCERTS series, we once again consciously combine music from past centuries with contemporary works, thus opening up new listening perspectives: between heaven and earth.

HEAVENLY SOUND
At the heart of the program are two impressive sacred works by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. His Magnificat , composed in Leipzig in 1749, combines festive splendor, virtuosic choirs, and an extraordinary intensity of expression. It reveals Bach as an independent and bold shaper of sound, who continued his father's tradition while simultaneously forging new paths. The later Heilig was enthusiastically received by his contemporaries – with its radiant double choir texture and visionary richness of sound, it ranks among the most impressive sacred compositions of the 18th century.

EARTHLY PREMIERE
Between these two masterpieces, the world premiere of Michael Ostrzyga's "Take Me to Him" for a cappella choir will be performed. The work is based on the harrowing farewell letter of the shipwrecked Tjark Evers, who tragically perished in the North Sea in 1866, and creates an intimate, moving counterpoint to Bach's festive sound world. The multi-award-winning German composer Ostrzyga is also an experienced conductor and knows the choral instrument intimately. Like few others, he creates a unique, highly original, yet accessible, exciting, and poignant musical language.

BETWEEN HEAVEN AND EARTH
With the Zurich Sing-Akademie and the historically informed Orchestra La Scintilla under the direction of Florian Helgath, a multifaceted concert evening unfolds in the works of Bach and Ostrzyga, between heaven and earth – between hope and despair, this world and transcendence, human finitude – and musical elevation.

The Tonhalle Zürich, having undergone a complete programme of renovation between 2017 and 2021, has now been restored to its former glory.

Built at the turn of the 20th century, the Tonhalle has seen many changes in the course of its history. Partially demolished, the building was extended with the addition of the Kongresshaus; much of its original ornamentation was removed; its colourful decoration was toned down and then restored. However, the two concert halls remained substantially unchanged – which is particularly fortunate, as the Grosse Tonhalle is acoustically one of the world’s finest concert venues.

The entire complex is now classified as a historical monument. Thanks to the Zurich electorate, which in 2016 voted by a large majority in favour of a complete renovation, the venue now meets today’s varying requirements both in the auditorium and behind the scenes – and has been restored to its former glory. Following the renovation programme lasting from 2017 to 2021, the Grosse Tonhalle’s old tonal brilliance has also returned.
