In 1837, Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas obtained from the Duke of Orleans the creation of a new theater. Thus was born the troupe of the Renaissance Theater, installed "Salle Ventadour", whose ambition was to offer Romanticism a framework of expression worthy of its influence.

Its Inauguration, November 8, 1838 with the creation of "Ruy Blas", is a triumph. Very quickly, however, the problems are linked. And under pressure from the Opera and the Opéra-comique the theater, which played Delavigne, Dumas Père, Gérard de Nerval and Hugo with a troupe led by the great Frédérick Lemaître, must close on May 23, 1841…

It was only after the war, in 1872, that the architect Charles Delalande, assistant to Charles Garnier, began the construction of a new room, on the rubble of a restaurant burnt down by the communards. Perfect example of Italian theater, architecturally very close to the Opera, the Renaissance theater, fits perfectly into the new Parisian theatrical geography imposed by the great Haussmann works. Completed in just eight months, it turns into a successful hall from the first on March 8, 1873. Its prestige will no longer be disputed and other illustrious names will be associated with it: Feydeau was its secretary before it was created in 1886 “Tailleur pour Dames”, his first play and his first great success.
