MOURN blends ancient Balkan laments with Renaissance funeral music in a poetic ritual of grief. Voices in period and folk costume guide you through scenes that shift between concert, theatre and ceremony. Experience a moving farewell that spans centuries and cultures.Set within a dimly lit stage that shifts between solemn ritual and dramatic concert, this production stages a poetic exploration of grief. Interweaving the funeral lament—a defining form of early opera inspired by ancient Greek tragedy—with the living laments of Balkan villages, singers in Renaissance doublets and embroidered folk dresses move through tableaux of mourning. From Monteverdi’s intricate polyphony to raw, improvised lamentations from Albania, Epirus and Thrace, each scene reimagines how communities have sung to the dead: part ceremony, part theatrical confession. The ensemble alternates between meticulously notated compositions by Monteverdi, Gesualdo and Strozzi and spine-tingling vocal triangulations that feel both archaic and urgently alive. As the performance unfolds, moments of hushed introspection give way to communal cries, creating a ritual of farewell that transcends time and place. This is an invitation to witness grief as a shared language— a moving journey through loss where every lament becomes an act of remembrance and renewal.
