Verbier Festival 2021

The Verbier Festival, now in its 28th year, announces its return for 17 days of concerts, masterclasses, talks and education events in the picturesque setting of the Swiss Alps.

Programme
Hector Berlioz: Roman Carnival Overture, Op. 9
Ernest Chausson: Poème for Violin and Orchestra in E flat major, op. 25
Johannes Brahms: Symphony no. 2 in D major, Op.73
Overview

American superstar violinist, Joshua Bell, returns to the Verbier Festival Mainstage, putting his romantic spin on Chausson’s Poème for violin and orchestra.

While Berlioz’s 1838 opera Benvenuto Cellini was dropped by the Paris Opera after just three performances, the concert overture he rescued from its themes—notably its love duet, heard on cor anglais, and its carnival music with its saltarello dance—is a fizzing masterpiece. Brahms’s Symphony No. 2 also dates from 1877, written over a summer holiday, just months after the premiere of his Symphony No. 1 which had been decades in gestation. Sunny, pastoral, peaceful and playful, No. 2 was an instant success.
