Overview

Brahms triumphs over self-doubt in his Symphony No. 1, and a pair of DSO principals share the spotlight in Mozart’s bubbly Concerto for Flute and Harp.

Brahms wrestled with self-doubt and frustration for 21 years while composing his Symphony No. 1 — an artistic battle we can hear in the roar of sound that opens the work. Amid the drama and angst, however, Brahms’ symphony also showcases his gentler side, journeying through moments of heavenly lyricism and playful dances before ending in a brassy blaze of triumph.

Two of the most enchanting orchestral voices share the spotlight in Mozart’s Concerto for Flute, Harp and Orchestra, a work inspired by the bubbly French music the composer heard while living in Paris. Overflowing with melodies of gentle beauty, tranquility and charm, Mozart’s musical confection is brought to life by DSO principals David Buck and Emily Levin.
