The Northern Kunqu Opera Theatre presents the story of the impoverished scholar Zhu Maichen and Cui, who leaves him for another man. Cui learns that Zhu has become Governor of Kuaiji. She dreams that he sends for her, but wakes disappointed and loses her mind. When she begs to restore their marriage, he replies that spilled water cannot be gathered and leaves. Yuan Guoliang plays Zhu Maichen and Yu Xuejiao plays Cui.

Named after the Peking Opera master Mei Lanfang, this theatre brings traditional Chinese opera into a modern performance setting.
The red exterior and glass facade introduce a venue belonging to the China National Peking Opera Company. Two auditoriums offer different scales of performance: the main theatre and a smaller space on the fourth floor, both at the Ping’anli West Street address.
