The season also marks the continued evolution of the newly redesigned Hunter Pavilion, elevating the listening experience for audiences and artists alike.

Ludwig van Beethoven : String Quartet no. 16 in F major, Op.135
Overview

Beethoven’s jovial final quartet and music from Mozart and Shostakovich

“There are simply two kinds of string quartets: the Danish, and the others,” writes Boston Classical Review. For over twenty years, the Grammy-nominated Danish String Quartet has asserted its preeminence among the world’s finest string quartets. Formed when they were in their teens, the ensemble is renowned for impeccable musicianship, sophisticated artistry, exquisite clarity, and, above all, and an unmatched ability to play as one.

Performances are characterized by a rare musical spontaneity, exuding a palpable joy in music-making that has made them one of today’s most highly acclaimed and in-demand classical quartets. Gramophone declares: "The Danish are remarkable, as ever - capable of intense blend, extreme dynamic variation (in which they seem glued together), perfect intonation even on harmonics, and constant vitality and flow." For this exquisite artistry, the quartet has received numerous honors, including Musical America’s 2020 Ensemble of the Year, the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award, BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists, membership in the Bowers Program (formerly CMS Two), and Denmark’s prestigious Carl Nielsen Prize.

In this program, the quartet romps around Beethoven’s jovial final quartet, delights in the playful brilliance of Mozart, and explores the depth of Shostakovich’s profoundly inquisitive Third Quartet—affirming at every turn that they are “one of the best quartets before the public today” (Washington Post).

Venue Info

Martin Theatre - Highland Park
Location   Park and Green Bay Road

Just inside the festival’s main gate and steps from the train, the historic Martin Theatre is the only building that remains from the original construction of Ravinia, which opened in 1904. Beautifully restored in 1992, the 850-seat concert hall is home to stunning performances by the world’s finest chamber ensembles and vocal and instrumental soloists.

Located within the historic grounds of Ravinia Park, the Martin Theatre is one of the intimate indoor venues of the renowned Ravinia Festival. Offering a more personal concert experience, the theatre provides an elegant setting where audiences can connect closely with performers and appreciate the finest details of musical interpretation.

The Martin Theatre is particularly valued for chamber music, solo recitals, vocal performances, and smaller-scale presentations. Its intimate atmosphere and excellent acoustics create a setting where every nuance of the performance can be experienced with exceptional clarity, allowing musicians and audiences to share a direct and engaging artistic dialogue.

As part of Ravinia’s diverse summer season, the venue reflects the festival’s commitment to presenting music in many different forms — from classical masterpieces and emerging artists to innovative programmes that expand traditional concert experiences. The theatre’s smaller scale complements the grandeur of Ravinia’s larger outdoor stages, adding variety and depth to the festival’s artistic landscape.

Surrounded by the historic charm of Ravinia Park, the Martin Theatre offers visitors an opportunity to experience music in a relaxed and refined environment. The combination of beautiful surroundings, outstanding acoustics, and the festival’s celebrated artistic tradition makes each performance especially memorable.
