Festival

Lehár Festival Bad Ischl 2023

The largest operetta festival in Austria opens the 2023 season with a real firework of music, dance and passion, with a master operetta meeting a great revue. In the charming town of Bad Ischl, where Franz Lehár wrote his immortal works, the light cheerfulness of the operetta is still in the air today.

Overview

Franz Lehár's operetta Schön ist die Welt is a precious rarity that is ideally suited to Bad Ischl, as the action takes place in the Alps. This astonishing creation of the operetta grandmaster will be staged by the Lehár Festival in 2023 semi-staged and with a top-class cast.

Enthralled by the mighty landscape, the Franz Lehár Orchestra sings the title melody "The world is beautiful". The turbulent story about two royal children who do not want to marry with a happy ending is embedded in a virtuoso musical painting, Lehár's declaration of love for the mountains.

History
Premiere of this production: 03 December 1930, Metropol Theater in Berlin

Schön ist die Welt is an operetta in three acts by Franz Lehár to a libretto by Ludwig Herzer and Fritz Löhner-Beda . The work had its world premiere on December 3, 1930, at the Metropol Theater in Berlin with Richard Tauber and Gitta Alpár. This is the new version of the operetta Endlich Alone, which was staged for the first time on January 30, 1914, at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna to a libretto by Alfred Maria Willner.

Synopsis

Act 1
Scene: hotel hall

According to his father's wish, Prince Georg should marry the niece of Duchess Brankenhorst, Princess Elisabeth von und zu Lichtenberg. But neither of the two young people would ever dream of having their spouse dictated to them. Here in the "Hotel des Alpes" in Tyrol they are supposed to meet for the first time and forge tender bonds. That's how it happens, but neither of them knows who the other really is. What unites the two is their love for the mountains.

Act 2
Scenes: rocky plateau - alpine pasture - mountain hut

Elisabeth and Georg go on a high mountain tour in the Alps and enjoy nature. Beautiful is the world high above the valleys! As the hikers rest in front of a hut, they hear a call to the population on the radio to help in the search for the missing princess. She was last seen by a local accompanied by an unknown young man. Elisabeth wants to return to the valley immediately, but a sudden change in the weather thwarts the plan. For better or worse, the couple has to spend the night in the mountains. The two grow closer and confess their love.

Act 3
Scene: hotel hall

Elisabeth and Georg secretly sneak back into the hotel. The princess immediately goes to see her aunt and tells her that she has found the love of her life, namely her fellow mountaineer. Both the king and duchess are upset that they cannot impose their will on the children. But just at that moment, Georg appears and Elisabeth reveals his incognito. When the lovers fall into each other's arms, this is also a reason for joy for the duchess and the king, because their plan has finally worked out.

Venue Info

Kongress and TheaterHaus Bad Ischl - Bad Ischl
Location   Kurhausstraße 8

Located in the heart of the imperial spa town of Bad Ischl, the Kongress & TheaterHaus Bad Ischl is a historic cultural venue where elegant architecture, theatrical tradition, and musical heritage come together. Surrounded by the beautiful Kurpark and the atmosphere of the Salzkammergut region, it has long been one of the most important stages for performing arts in Austria.

The history of the building dates back to the 19th century, when Bad Ischl developed into a famous imperial summer resort and a meeting place for artists, composers, and aristocracy. Originally created as a Kurhaus, the venue became a centre for concerts, social events, and cultural gatherings before evolving into today’s modern theatre and congress complex.

With its historic façade and contemporary interior facilities, the Kongress & TheaterHaus combines the charm of the past with the technical possibilities of a modern performance venue. Its theatre hall, equipped for large-scale productions, provides an ideal environment for opera, operetta, concerts, and theatrical performances.

The venue holds a special place in the cultural life of Bad Ischl as one of the main stages of the renowned Lehár Festival Bad Ischl. Dedicated to the tradition of Viennese operetta and the legacy of Franz Lehár, the festival continues the musical spirit that has surrounded the town for more than a century.

Performances at the Kongress & TheaterHaus offer audiences a unique experience: the refinement of a historic spa town, the intimacy of a traditional European theatre, and the artistic energy of contemporary productions. The combination of architecture, music, and the Alpine landscape of the Salzkammergut creates an atmosphere that is both elegant and unforgettable.
