Overview

An Evening for and with Mozart

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is at least one of, if not the most famous, composers of classical music. But anyone who thinks they truly know him will be repeatedly proven wrong at our Mozart Night. Since 1993, the Rheingau Music Festival has dedicated this special three-part concert format to the multifaceted aspects of this genius that never cease to surprise. Unfinished works, sparkling gems, and epochal masterpieces are brought to light. Under the direction of Daniel Dodds, the Festival Strings Lucerne, together with OPUS KLASSIK award winner Leia Zhu on violin, who performed at the Rheingau Music Festival as a 15-year-old, and Wassili Wohlgemuth on viola – known to festival audiences as part of last year's Elster Trio – will open the Mozart Night in the cloister of Eberbach Abbey. In the second part of the event, the audience can finally decide for themselves in which rooms of the monastery complex they would like to listen to further Mozart specialists in outstanding chamber music formations, before the orchestra concludes this evening with Mozart's large-scale "Jupiter Symphony".

Venue Info

Kloster Eberbach (Eberbach Abbey) - Eltville am Rhein
Location   Kloster Eberbach, 65346

Nestled among the vineyards of the Rheingau, Kloster Eberbach is one of the most iconic and atmospheric venues of the Rheingau Musik Festival. Founded in 1136 by Cistercian monks, the monastery is considered one of Europe's finest examples of medieval monastic architecture. Its remarkable blend of Romanesque and early Gothic design provides an unforgettable setting where centuries of history meet world-class musical performance.

The monastery's historic buildings create a variety of extraordinary concert spaces, each with its own distinctive atmosphere. The magnificent Basilica, with its soaring vaulted ceilings and impressive acoustics, is ideally suited to large-scale choral and orchestral works, while the atmospheric Lay Dormitory (Laienrefektorium) and other historic halls provide intimate settings for chamber music, solo recitals, and vocal performances.

As one of the principal venues of the Rheingau Musik Festival, Kloster Eberbach has welcomed many of the world's leading orchestras, conductors, soloists, and chamber ensembles. The monastery's exceptional acoustics, combined with its architectural grandeur, allow audiences to experience music with extraordinary clarity and emotional depth.

The venue is also internationally known as one of the filming locations for The Name of the Rose, whose medieval atmosphere introduced the monastery to audiences around the world. Today, its tranquil cloisters, stone halls, and vineyard surroundings continue to inspire visitors long before the first note is played.

Attending a concert at Kloster Eberbach is more than a musical event—it is an immersive cultural experience. As daylight fades over the surrounding vineyards and music fills the ancient stone walls, the monastery becomes a place where history, architecture, and artistic excellence unite in perfect harmony.

Majestic, historic, and acoustically magnificent, Kloster Eberbach offers one of the most unforgettable concert experiences of the Rheingau Musik Festival, where timeless music resonates within the walls of one of Germany's greatest medieval monuments.
