Rheingau Musik Festival 2026

The Rheingau Musik Festival 2026 invites music lovers to experience one of Europe’s most inspiring summer festivals, where outstanding performances unfold among vineyards, historic castles, monasteries, and elegant concert halls along the Rhine. From 20 June to 5 September 2026, the Rheingau region becomes a vibrant musical landscape, bringing together internationally acclaimed artists, exceptional ensembles, and unforgettable concert experiences.

Programme
Camille Saint-Saëns: Violin sonata no. 1 in D minor, Op.75
Ludwig van Beethoven : String Quartet no. 11 in F minor, "Serioso", Op.95
Ernest Chausson: Concerto in D major for violin, piano and string quartet, Op.21
Overview

Lisa Batiashvili's planned performances as Artist in Residence at the festival in 2020 had to be cancelled due to the pandemic. But this coming summer, she will finally return to the Rheingau! Joining her will be the multi-award-winning Schumann Quartet and the charismatic pianist Nino Gvetadze. At the heart of the program: Ernest Chausson's Concerto for Violin, Piano, and String Quartet, Op. 21 – a masterpiece poised between late Romanticism and Impressionism. The audience can look forward to an interpretation of gripping intensity and artistic refinement. As the quartet, winner of the 2019 OPUS KLASSIK award, aptly puts it: "A work truly unfolds only live." Just how impressive this can sound with Saint-Saëns, Beethoven, and Chausson can be experienced this evening at Johannisberg Castle.

Venue Info

Johannisberg Castle - Geisenheim-Johannisberg
Location   Johannisberg Castle

High above the Rhine Valley in the wine village of Johannisberg, Schloss Johannisberg is one of the most atmospheric and prestigious venues of the Rheingau Musik Festival. Surrounded by endless vineyards and panoramic views over the river, the historic estate offers a setting where music, wine culture, and centuries of European history come together in a uniquely elegant experience.

With origins dating back more than a thousand years, Schloss Johannisberg is one of the most important wine estates in the world and the historic birthplace of Riesling Spätlese. Its baroque palace, vineyard terraces, and stately courtyards create an environment of refined beauty that naturally lends itself to cultural events of the highest level.

During the Rheingau Musik Festival, the estate transforms into an extraordinary open-air and indoor concert venue. Performances take place in carefully selected spaces within the castle complex, where intimate acoustics and breathtaking surroundings enhance the musical experience. Chamber music, vocal recitals, and small orchestral programmes are particularly suited to this unique environment.

The combination of music and landscape is central to the Schloss Johannisberg experience. As the sun sets over the vineyards and the Rhine glimmers in the distance, concerts take on a special atmosphere of intimacy and timelessness, where nature itself feels like part of the performance.

As one of the festival’s signature locations, Schloss Johannisberg reflects the spirit of the Rheingau Musik Festival: presenting world-class artistry in places of deep historical and cultural significance. It embodies the idea that music is not only heard, but also experienced through place, memory, and landscape.

Elegant, historic, and surrounded by one of Germany’s most beautiful vineyard landscapes, Schloss Johannisberg offers a magical festival setting where great music resonates in harmony with centuries of wine and cultural tradition.
