Overview

Ambush from Ten Sides is one of celebrated Chinese choreographer Yang Liping's most acclaimed dance theatre productions. Inspired by the legendary Battle of Gaixia (202 BC) and the famous story of Farewell My Concubine, the work transforms a historic military conflict into a poetic meditation on human nature, fate, desire and fear. Rather than presenting a conventional historical narrative, Yang Liping uses the ancient Chu–Han struggle as a metaphor for the emotional and psychological battles experienced by modern humanity.

Originally premiered in 2015, the production returned in a newly reimagined 2026 edition with a completely new cast and refreshed staging after more than a decade of artistic refinement. The revival preserves the original concept while introducing deeper psychological characterization and renewed contemporary relevance.

Unlike traditional dance dramas, the production combines contemporary dance, Peking Opera, martial arts, installation art, paper-cutting, performance art and multimedia stage imagery into a unique theatrical language. Weapons rarely appear on stage, yet the atmosphere remains charged with danger through movement, symbolism and visual design. Thousands of suspended scissors, created as a monumental installation by artist Beili Liu, hover above the performers as a metaphor for violence, destiny and invisible threats. Throughout the performance, a paper-cutting artist works live on stage, symbolically shaping and erasing history before the audience's eyes.

Yang Liping deliberately abandons linear storytelling in favor of symbolic theatrical imagery. Xiang Yu, Liu Bang, Han Xin and Consort Yu become archetypes representing ambition, loyalty, betrayal, love and sacrifice. The famous suicide of Consort Yu is portrayed not with a sword but through a long red silk ribbon, creating one of the production's most powerful and distinctly Eastern theatrical images.

The 2026 version emphasizes that the "ambush" is no longer merely a battlefield tactic—it represents the invisible conflicts surrounding every individual in contemporary life: competition, anxiety, fear, temptation and moral choices. Through breathtaking choreography, striking visual metaphors and an immersive theatrical environment, the production invites audiences to reflect on timeless questions about power, violence, destiny and humanity.

Guangzhou Opera House is a Chinese opera house in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, People's Republic of China. Designed by Zaha Hadid, it opened on the 9th of May in 2010.

In April 2002 an international architectural competition attracted Coop Himmelb(l)au, Rem Koolhaas and Zaha Hadid – each producing detailed designs. In November 2002, Zaha Hadid's "double pebble" was announced the winner and the groundbreaking ceremony was held early in 2005.

The theatre has become the biggest performing centre in southern China and is one of the three biggest theatres in the nation alongside Beijing's National Centre for the Performing Arts and Shanghai's Shanghai Grand Theatre. May 2010 saw American filmmaker Shahar Stroh direct the premiere production of the opera house: Puccini's opera Turandot which had in previous years been a controversial opera in China.

The structure was designed by Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid. It is conceived as two rocks washed away by the Pearl River. Its freestanding concrete auditorium set within an exposed granite and glass-clad steel frame took over five years to build, and was praised upon opening by architectural critic Jonathan Glancey in The Guardian, who called it "at once highly theatrical and insistently subtle."
