Overview

The pianist club is dedicating its concert to last year's great jubilee, Ludwig van Beethoven.

This composer became immortal because like the most important artists - be they painters, poets, or musicians - like the most daring architects, like the most famous athletes, he overcame borders. In this concert, you can experience piano works by the classical master that set new standards.

In the beginning, you will hear what Beethoven himself called the “Grande Sonate Pathétique”. Immediately noticeable is the composer's uncertainty and shock in the face of the fact that he is beginning to become aware of his deafness. This is how one of the first program piano sonatas came about. The "Eroica Variations" are among Beethoven's greatest works of variations. It was not without pride that the composer emphasized to his publisher that the work had been "edited in a really completely new way."
The sonata "Les adieux" or "Das Lebewohl" is in the same key and is characterized by a joyful and excited character. Beethoven dedicated it to "His Imperial Highness the Revered Archduke Rudolph of Austria" and thus to his most important patron. The final highlight is the "Appassionata", a sister work of the "Pathétique". With this great piano work from his middle creative period, Beethoven reached the zenith of his work and ventured into hitherto unattained artistic and pianistic horizons. Thanks to new instruments, the composer revolutionized piano technique and elicited soundscapes of previously unimagined intensity and dramatic heights from the traditional sonata form.

Gasteig - Munich
Location   Rosenheimer Straße 5

Gasteig is a cultural center in Munich, opened in 1985, which hosts the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. The Richard Strauss Conservatory, the Volkshochschule, and the municipal library are all located in the Gasteig. Most of the events of the Filmfest München and many of the events of the Munich Biennale take place here.

The Philharmonic Hall, opening like a great wood-paneled seashell, has an intimate atmosphere but poor acoustic qualities. The smaller hall "Kleiner Konzertsaal" offers slightly better acoustics for chamber music. The Gasteig comprises the Carl Orff Hall with a stage for drama, the Richard Strauss Conservatory, the Black Box studio theatre, the Münchner Volkshochschule (Adult Education Centre) for further education, various cafés and shops, e.g. the 'Pappnase' (cardboard nose) offering a selection of dramatic requisites, and the central branch of the Municipal Library with its extensive stock of books and periodicals.

The estate behind the Gasteig was until its demolition in 1979 the location of the Bürgerbräukeller, stage for the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch and the 1939 Hitler assassination attempt by Georg Elser. A showcase visible from the outside of the Gasteig commemorates Elser's history.
