Overview

Johann Strauss Orchestra Vienna. Strauss Family Music and other Viennese composers of the same period.

In 1966, 120 years after Johann Strauss Sr. founded the Strauss Orchestra, people's pursuit of high-quality interpretation of light music prompted musicians from the Vienna Radio Orchestra to establish the Vienna Johann Strauss Orchestra. The orchestra not only promotes the music created by the Strauss family, but also takes it as its mission to carry forward the local music of Vienna. The orchestra consists of 42 musicians, a composition deeply loved and recognized by the Strauss family, in order to present more authentic and pure works of the Strauss family.

In the year of its founding, the orchestra, under the baton of Johann Strauss II, the great-nephew of the late composer, Eduard Strauss II, embarked on a six-week tour of the United States and Canada, following in the footsteps of the famous Strauss Orchestra, which had toured the United States and Canada twice before Eduard Strauss I dissolved the orchestra in New York in 1901.

After the death of Edward II, the last professional musician of the Strauss family, Willy Boskovsky took over as the orchestra's chief conductor in 1968. Willy Boskovsky's name is closely related to the tradition of the Vienna New Year's Concert and has become a representative figure of the Vienna New Year's Concert.

Under Boskovsky's leadership, the orchestra resumed its busy touring until today, with performances in countries and regions including Europe, the United States, South America, South Korea, Russia, China and Japan.

The Willy Boskovsky era also saw the beginning of an active recording industry, which reached its peak in the 1970s, when the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) recorded almost all of the music of the Strauss family. The number of recordings reached nearly 1,000, of which 190 albums were released worldwide.

After Boskovsky's death, the orchestra was mainly conducted by Walter Goldschmidt, Rudolf Bibl and Kurt Huass. Later, many famous conductors such as Alfred Ischke, Ola Rudner, Franz Bauer-Thurso, Martin Sieghardt and Johannes Widener continued to take over, inheriting the orchestra's pure and traditional interpretation. Since 2008, the Vienna Johann Strauss Orchestra has worked closely with Austrian conductor Johannes Widener. Since 2010, Widener and Ischke have jointly served as the orchestra's resident conductors.

The Johann Strauss Orchestra Vienna has been giving regular concerts in the Musikverein since 1981 and has been hosting its season concerts in this world-famous concert hall since 1999. The orchestra also performs in other major concert halls in Austria, including the Brucknerhalle in Linz and the Stefanisalle in Graz. Recent highlights include concerts in the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, the Gasteig in Munich, the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad and the Rheingau Festival in Wiesbaden.
