Overview

Candide brings together the razor-sharp satire of Voltaire, the dazzling music of Leonard Bernstein, and exuberant theatrical comedy in a spectacular globe-trotting adventure.

The story follows the endlessly optimistic Candide as he journeys through a chaotic world filled with romantic disappointment, war, natural disasters, corruption, and the absurdities of human society. Guided by the belief that this is “the best of all possible worlds,” Candide encounters one outrageous situation after another while searching for love, meaning, and happiness.

Conducted by Lina González-Granados, this vibrant production showcases Bernstein’s brilliant opera-meets-Broadway score, featuring beloved numbers such as “Glitter and Be Gay” and “Make Our Garden Grow.” Lavish 18th-century-inspired costumes and visual design by Tony Award winner Jennifer Moeller create a richly theatrical world filled with wit, color, and spectacle.

Based on Voltaire’s classic novella, the production features a book adapted by Hugh Wheeler in a version by John Caird, with lyrics by Richard Wilbur and additional contributions from Stephen Sondheim, John La Touche, Lillian Hellman, Dorothy Parker, and Bernstein himself.

History
Premiere of this production: 01 December 1956, Martin Beck Theatre, Broadway

Candide is an operetta with music composed by Leonard Bernstein, based on the 1759 novella of the same name by Voltaire. The operetta was first performed in 1956 with a libretto by Lillian Hellman; but since 1974 it has been generally performed with a book by Hugh Wheeler which is more faithful to Voltaire's novel. The primary lyricist was the poet Richard Wilbur. Other contributors to the text were John Latouche, Dorothy Parker, Lillian Hellman, Stephen Sondheim, John Mauceri, John Wells, and Bernstein himself. Maurice Peress and Hershy Kay contributed orchestrations. Although unsuccessful at its premiere, Candide has now overcome the unenthusiastic reaction of early audiences and critics and achieved enormous popularity. It is very popular among major music schools as a student show because of the quality of its music and the opportunities it offers to student singers.
