Conductor Yang Chunlin and the Beijing Qinsheng Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra welcome the New Year with Strauss-family favourites and a colourful programme of orchestral classics.
The Beijing Qinsheng Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra brings together artists and music-school graduates whose members remain active in Chinese orchestras. Yang Chunlin is a national first-class conductor and composer who has worked as a guest conductor in China and abroad. Violinist and conductor Jia Qinsheng serves as concertmaster.
The programme celebrates the Strauss family, whose music is closely tied to Vienna's identity. Johann Strauss I was known as the 'father of the waltz', while Johann Strauss II was called the 'Waltz King'; their works for Austrian emperors and nobility helped define an era of light music.
The Blue Danube and Voices of Spring offer flowing waltz melodies, while Thunder and Lightning and the Radetzky March bring sharper rhythmic contrast. The programme also visits Swan Lake and Carmen, with room for Brahms, Elgar, Mozart and Shostakovich.
