Overview

"Du Shiniang" is an original Chinese musical created by the China National Theatre. The production is based on the famous Ming Dynasty novella about the talented courtesan Du Shinyang, who dreams of freedom and true love but faces betrayal and cruel social prejudice.

The musical "Du Shiniang" brings to the stage one of the most famous stories in classical Chinese literature—"Du Shinyang Throws the Treasure Box into the River in Anger" from Feng Menglong's collection "Stories Warning the World." The story follows the young courtesan Du Shinyang, who buys her freedom, hoping to start a new life with her beloved Li Jia.

However, under social pressure and for money, Li Jia betrays her, selling her to a wealthy merchant. Realizing his betrayal, Du Shinyang publicly opens the treasure box, proving her love was sincere and selfless, before throwing the treasure into the river and killing herself. This tragic scene has become one of the most famous episodes in Chinese literature.

This musical production reimagines the classic story through the medium of contemporary musical theater. Original music, vocal performances, large-scale sets, multimedia projections, and choreography combine traditional Chinese culture with contemporary theatrical expression, exploring themes of love, freedom, human dignity, and the status of women in society.
