Overview

"Wing Chun" is one of the most renowned contemporary Chinese dance dramas, produced by the Shenzhen Opera & Dance Theatre. The production combines classical Chinese dance, martial arts, and cinematic set design, telling the story of the great master Ip Man and the art of Wing Chun through two intertwining storylines.

"Wing Chun" is an original dance drama that premiered in 2022. The production tells two parallel stories: one about the legendary Wing Chun master Ip Man, who strives to preserve and pass on his art after moving to Hong Kong, and the other about a modern film crew creating a film about his life. These two storylines intertwine, connecting the past and the present.

The production's key feature is its unique blend of dance and Chinese martial arts. The production incorporates elements of Wing Chun, Tai Chi, Baguazhang, Bajiquan, and Praying Mantis. Large-scale sets, a revolving stage, multimedia projections, and original music create a cinematic narrative. "Wing Chun" is considered one of the most successful contemporary Chinese dance dramas and has represented China on numerous international tours.

The dance drama Wing Chun was written by Feng Shuangbai, chairman of the China Dancers Association, co-directed by the acclaimed choreographers in the Mainland, Han Zhen and Zhou Liya and performed by Shenzhen Opera and Dance Theatre. The story begins with the 20th century film Wing Chun, presenting two parallel narratives: the "backstage" story of the film crew, and the "on-screen" journey of Ip Man’s struggles in Hong Kong. The performance integrates martial arts with classical and modern dance, providing the audience with a captivating visual experience.
