Peking opera Taizhen Waizhuan follows Yang Yuhuan from her rise as Precious Consort to the flight that ends at Mawei Slope, with Lu Jie in the leading role.
Jingju Theater Company of Beijing presents Lu Jie, billed in the dignified Mei-school female role, on this tour as Yang Yuhuan. Qiu Shi plays Emperor Xuanzong, Tang Minghuang, and Liu Mingzhe is among the principals.
The piece is Taizhen Waizhuan, Taizhen's unofficial biography. Xuanzong offers incense at Taizhen Palace and is struck by Yang Yuhuan, daughter of Shu registrar Yang Xuan and formerly a concubine of the Prince of Shou. He titles her Precious Consort. Her beauty and art bring titles for her siblings and a relay of lychees. On Qixi, the Double Seventh, after a bath at Huaqing Pool, they pledge lasting harmony in the Palace of Eternal Life.
An Lushan's rebellion breaks that favour. Xuanzong, lost to wine and beauty, flees toward Shu with Yuhuan. At Mawei Slope the troops kill Yang Guozhong and demand her death, so he gives her a white silk sash and orders her to hang herself. After the war he returns to unchanged gardens, sends Taoist adepts for her spirit, and meets her in a dream on a fairy mountain at sea.
