A birthday celebration at the Yang residence is interrupted by news that Yang Zongbao has been killed while resisting an invasion. His relatives try to hide the report from She Taijun, but she discovers the truth and insists that the emperor be informed.
At court, Wang Hui argues for peace and Kou Zhun for war. She Taijun and Mu Guiying volunteer the Yang women for the campaign; a contest between Mu Guiying and her son helps overcome doubts about Yang Wenguang joining them, and the family sets out.
When the enemy tries to lure Yang Wenguang into an ambush, She Taijun devises a counter-plan. Mu Guiying and her son enter Hulu Valley, while Yang Zongbao’s groom and old horse search for a path that enables a pincer attack and a triumphant return.
