RPO Artist-in-Residence Liya Petrova, hailed as ‘Exquisite’ by The Guardian, commands the stage with Stravinsky’s Violin Concerto—infamous for its ‘impossible’ opening chord, rendered here with breathtaking finesse under the Ukrainian baton of guest conductor Kirill Karabits. Karabits then illuminates a rare gem: Angel by Ukrainian composer Fyodor Akimenko, its lush harmonies and vivid orchestral colours painting a sonic landscape seldom heard in Britain. The concert concludes with Tchaikovsky’s spirited Symphony No. 2, the ‘Little Russian’, transforming cherished folk melodies into a tapestry of dance-like rhythms and profound emotion.
