Overview

What a way to launch Birmingham Classical 2026/27! Martha Argerich is a true legend: “unquestionably one of the greatest pianists of all time” (Gramophone); “stars don’t come much bigger in classical music” (The Guardian). Added to which, this is the first time in over 30 years that she has played in Symphony Hall and it’s also her first Birmingham Classical appearance. Partnered by the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra in their only UK performance outside London, expect sheer magic in Beethoven’s youthful and exuberant Second Piano Concerto.

This long-established orchestra is at the heart of Munich’s cultural life since it was founded in 1893. Touring with newly-appointed Chief Conductor Lahav Shani, they begin with a comparative rarity – an attention-grabbing overture by 19th century French pianist-composer Louise Farrenc. Brahms’s Fourth Symphony, with its lilting opening movement and the driving momentum of its thrilling finale, makes the perfect conclusion to an exceptional evening.
