Richard Wagner: Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg: Prelude to Act 1
Dmitri Shostakovich: Concerto for Piano, Trumpet and String Orchestra in C minor, op. 35
Jean Sibelius: Symphony no. 2 in D major, Op.43
Overview

Everything is there: the old German Nuremberg with a guild of singers, the scent of lilacs and a prize song, a Finnish national shrine and a surprisingly light-hearted piece of the Soviet Union. Michael Sanderling has played his way into the hearts of Bernese audiences many times, and Dmitrij Shostakovich also played a central role. Here it is, then, the wonderful Opus 35 to which the Berlin conductor devotes himself, this exuberant concert satire, in which everything always turns out differently than expected: a piano that has almost mutated into percussion, the trumpet that unexpectedly appears, plus popular tunes, waltzes, Jazz and classical quotes - a work that exudes cheerfulness, wit and spirit. The young Frenchman Lucas Debargue takes on the piano part, whose steep career is just as extraordinary as his solo role in this concert. He is supported by Milko Raspanti, principal trumpeter of the BSO. Sibelius' second symphony provides the crowning glory. With a pastoral beginning and a hymn-like finale, this orchestral work is also carried by a positive mood - in short: there could hardly have been a better program for these times.
