Programme
Rodion Shchedrin: Concerto for Orchestra No. 1 “Naughty Limericks”
Jean Sibelius: Violin Concerto in D minor, Op.47
Sergei Prokofiev: Symphony no. 5 in B flat major, Op.100
Overview

The program of the twelfth symphony concert takes you north-northeast in this direction: The focus of the event is the late romantic, cosmopolitan violin concerto by the great Finnish national composer Jean Sibelius, one of the most impressive productions of virtuoso violin art ever. In his mid-20s, the Viennese musician Emmanuel Tjeknavorian is already one of the top stars on the international violin scene. He is regarded as one who can join the gallery of all those heroes since Jascha Heifetz who once established the world fame of this violin concerto. The young British conductor Alexander Soddy chose two scores from the Soviet era as a framework. Rodion Shchedrin's Naughty Limericksare a concert competition of themes and motifs steeped in popular music, which are processed into an artistic patchwork with sophistication and ambiguous wit. The finale is the great Fifth by Sergei Prokofiev, carried by patriotic gestures, composed during the decisive battles of the Second World War and according to the intention of its creator, no less than a "song to free and happy people".
