Qian Ying plays four roles in Duanzhangbian, a Hu opera that brings three Lu Xun stories into a paper world of awakening, love and social constraint.
Qian Ying plays the chronicler Duanzhangbian, White Light, Zijun and Xianglin’s Wife. Shi Jiajie portrays Chen Shicheng, Juansheng and the Threshold; Wu Xiaobo plays A Sui, a pet dog who supports Zijun and observes her fate.
The paper-stage concept draws on Lu Xun’s The White Light, Regret for the Past and The New Year Sacrifice. Characters break through a manuscript grid as Chen Shicheng pursues examination success, Zijun follows love towards freedom, and Xianglin’s Wife seeks redemption.
Director Zeng Huicheng, credited as Chris Zeng, uses movement and light in this setting. Simon Wells designs movable text grids, while writer Zhang Yize and composer Hong Liyong bring contemporary perspectives to Hu opera’s traditional vocal style and modern musical language.
Paper tickets must be collected from the East Ticket Hall machines for entry through the East Gate; food, drinks, bottled water, flowers and noisy plastic bags are barred from the auditorium, and photography or recording is prohibited during the performance.
