The East Is Red, the epic of Chinese revolutionary songs, performed as a concert for symphony orchestra, choir and soloists.
The production aims to keep the songs as they were written, presenting them as symphonic, choral, solo and ensemble numbers. It is performed by the Shengmi Orchestra, conducted by Zhao Jian, with the Beijing Friendship Choir and a line-up of young soloists, tenors and sopranos among them.
The East Is Red surveys the history of the Chinese revolution from the founding of the Communist Party in 1921 to the establishment of the People's Republic through the songs of each period. Many of them have been sung for decades, among them On the Songhua River, Nanniwan, Defend the Yellow River, Song of the Guerrillas and Without the Communist Party There Would Be No New China.
Its programme runs from the dawn over the East through the Long March and the war of resistance to the founding of New China, and suits anyone who wants to hear these songs in a full orchestral setting.
