Innsbruck Festival of Early Music 2026

The Innsbruck Festival of Early Music 2026 marks its 50th anniversary with a programme that celebrates five decades of excellence in historically informed performance. From 24 July to 30 August 2026, Innsbruck welcomes internationally acclaimed artists, outstanding ensembles, and music lovers from around the world to one of Europe's leading festivals dedicated to Renaissance and Baroque music. Concerts and opera performances unfold in the city's historic theatres, churches, and palaces, creating an atmosphere perfectly suited to this remarkable repertoire.

Programme
Overview

Together with his brothers Wieland (viola da gamba, cello) and Barthold (transverse flute), lutenist Konrad Junghänel, and harpsichordists Robert Kohnen and Gustav Leonhardt, the baroque violinist, conductor, and ensemble director Sigiswald Kuijken — born in Dilbeek, Belgium, in 1944 — was among the defining figures in the early years of the Ambraser Schlosskonzerte and the Innsbrucker Festwoche(n) der Alten Musik.

In 1972, Kuijken assembled an ensemble for a recording of Molière and Jean-Baptiste Lully’s Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme that would perform on original instruments or historically faithful replicas. This marked the birth of La Petite Bande. More than fifty years later, this pioneering ensemble continues to flourish. Alongside Kuijken’s wife, Marleen Thiers, on the viola, his daughters Sara, Marie, and Veronica have also been long-standing members.

At this year’s third Ambras Castle Concert, La Petite Bande returns to the festival for the first time since 1999 with an all-Bach programme, performed by a compact ensemble of seven musicians. In this festive setting, Sigiswald Kuijken will focus exclusively on the violoncello da spalla — an instrument whose revival within the historically informed performance movement he has championed for more than two decades. In works scored for as many as seven parts, the instrument forms the string bass, offering fresh listening perspectives — for instance, in the original version of Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068, featuring the celebrated Air.

Venue Info

Ambras Castle Innsbruck - Innsbruck
Location   Schlossstraße 20

Perched on a hillside overlooking Innsbruck, Ambras Castle is one of Austria's finest Renaissance landmarks and one of the most atmospheric venues of the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music. Built in the 16th century by Archduke Ferdinand II of Austria, the castle has long been associated with art, music, and the flourishing cultural life of the Habsburg court, making it a fitting setting for performances of Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces.

At the heart of the festival's activities within the castle is the magnificent Spanish Hall (Spanischer Saal), one of the most beautiful Renaissance halls in Europe. Completed between 1569 and 1572, the hall is renowned for its richly carved wooden ceiling, elegant proportions, and walls lined with full-length portraits of the rulers of Tyrol. Its remarkable acoustics and historic ambience create an ideal environment for early music performances.

During the festival, Ambras Castle hosts chamber concerts, vocal recitals, and programmes devoted to Renaissance and Baroque repertoire. Presented on period instruments and interpreted according to historically informed performance practice, these concerts allow audiences to experience music in surroundings closely connected to the era in which it was originally composed.

The intimate atmosphere of the Spanish Hall creates a unique relationship between performers and listeners. Rather than the grandeur of a modern concert hall, audiences encounter music in a setting that evokes the splendour of a Renaissance court, where architecture, history, and sound form a seamless artistic experience.

Beyond the concerts, visitors can explore the castle's celebrated collections, including the Chamber of Art and Curiosities, the Armoury, and beautifully landscaped gardens. Together with its commanding views over Innsbruck and the surrounding Alps, Ambras Castle offers a cultural experience that extends far beyond the performance itself.
