Violinist Xie Lingjie and pianist Mo Li explore the violin's expressive range through Chinese storytelling and European virtuosity.
Xie Lingjie is billed as a young violinist with a doctorate in violin performance from the Central Conservatory of Music. Pianist Mo Li is identified with Aiyuehui and the piano department of the China Conservatory of Music.
The complete Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto by Chen Gang and He Zhanhao supplies the narrative arc: sworn brotherhood, school days, a prolonged farewell, resistance, mourning and transformation into butterflies. Slides and ornaments draw on Chinese opera vocal styles within a Western violin-and-piano framework.
Sarasate's Zigeunerweisen and Massenet's Meditation show the violin's virtuosic and lyrical sides, while Chinese folk melodies extend the dialogue between European forms and Eastern musical storytelling.
Every attendee needs a ticket and must keep the assigned seat; outside food and drink are prohibited, and latecomers or audience members leaving during the performance must wait until a break between pieces to enter or return.
