Michaeliskirche

The Michaeliskirche in Leipzig is an evangelical church dedicated to the Archangel Michael from the turn of the 19th to 20th century.

History
It was built in 1901 by Leipzig architects Heinrich Rust and Alfred Müller as the main church of the newly developed northern suburb of Leipzig in the wake of the rapid increase in population and consecrated on 12 June 1904.  Today it is used liturgical by the Evangelical Lutheran Michaelis-Friedens-Kirchgemeinde.

Architecture
The church is located at an exposed point in the intersection of several visual axes on the North Square. It is unusual to have a north-south orientation, which is arranged in the direction of the roads of the northern suburbs. The cross-shaped church chapel is surrounded. The central, wide-seated Tower in the south of the building rises 70 meters high, making it one of the highest church towers in the city. The facade is made of Sandstone and rich in sculptural form wearing jewellery. Although still part of historicism, architecture does not follow a clear stylistic program, but combines Renaissance Gothic, neo-baroque and Art Nouveau elements.

The Michaeliskirche has survived the war disruptions unharmed and stands out by the original design of other church structures of the era.

Organ
The interior includes an organ from Sauer. The Instrument was built in 1904 and extensively restored in the years 1996-1999.
