About

Krzysztof Warlikowski figures among the reforming vanguard of theatrical language in Europe. With his productions of Shakespeare, notably based on the interpretations of Jan Kott, he has reinvigorated our perception in a spectacular way. His most outstanding productions include Anioły / Angels in America (Kushner), Madame de Sade (Mishima), Krum / Kroum l’ectoplasme (Levin), Koniec / The End (adapted from Kafka, Koltès and Coetzee), (A)polloniaA Streetcar (with Isabelle Huppert), African Tales inspired by the works of Shakespeare, Kabaret Warszawski, and The French. Krzysztof Warlikowski has re-forged the connection with the spectator by using an original process to prompt the audience into searching for meaning or meanings, particularly through cinematographic references or with the novel use of video. Extremely active in the field of opera, he has always managed to transpose his dramatic discoveries into it.

At the Paris Opera, his productions include Iphigénie en Tauride, The Markopoulos Affair, Parsifal, King Roger (Szymanowski), and Bluebeard’s Castle / La Voix humaine. He also directed The Rake’s Progress at the Staatsoper im Schiller Theater in Berlin, Eugene Onegin at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, where he also oversaw the production of Die Frau ohne Schatten to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the theatre’s reopening after World War II. He also works regularly with the Teatro Real in Madrid where he directed The Markopoulos Affair (which won the award for best stage direction at the 2009 Premios Liricos), King Roger, Poppea e Nerone (Monteverdi / Boesmans) and Alceste (Gluck). At La Monnaie in Brussels, he directed Médée (Cherubini) Macbeth (voted production of the year in 2009-10 by Opernwelt magazine), Lulu and Don Giovanni. In 2016, he directed Il Trionfo del tempo e del disinganno at the Aix Festival and Phèdre(s) (inspired by the work by Racine) at the Odéon-Théâtre de l’Europe.
In 2017, he staged Wozzeck at the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam and Schreker’s Die Gezeichneten at the Munich Festival. Krzysztof Warlikowski is also the director of the Nowy Teatr in Warsaw, an interdisciplinary cultural centre. His productions are performed all over the world.
